VAT or GST on GetYourGuide Commission: What Is This Line?

You have found “VAT on GYG Service” on the invoice and are wondering why tax has appeared on top of commission. Fair question. Tax does enjoy arriving just when a spreadsheet was beginning to look manageable.

First: what does “VAT on GYG Service” mean?

GetYourGuide’s current invoice Excel guide includes a field called VAT on GYG Service. It describes this as the VAT amount on GetYourGuide’s commission.

Its invoice PDF guide says Our Commission includes the Service Commission plus tax, mainly VAT or GST, where applicable.

So the basic idea is not that GetYourGuide has randomly taxed your entire payout for sport. The tax line relates to the commission or service GetYourGuide charges you, where local rules require it.

GetYourGuide’s invoice Excel guide is here.

Important: this page explains what the line means in the payout documents. It is not tax advice. Your actual treatment depends on your country, registration status and circumstances.

1. “But tax is already included in my ticket price”

This is probably the most natural reaction.

The booking itself and GetYourGuide’s commission can be two different transactions for tax purposes. GetYourGuide’s country-specific guidance for Australia, New Zealand, Turkey and Mexico, for example, explicitly explains that tax on the customer transaction is separate from tax charged on GetYourGuide’s platform commission.

That does not tell us what your tax position is. It simply explains why seeing tax in the ticket price does not automatically make a tax line on GetYourGuide’s commission a duplicate.

Tax law, as ever, has found a way to make “but I already paid tax” require a longer answer than any reasonable human hoped for.

2. Where does it appear?

In the detailed invoice Excel file, look for VAT on GYG Service. In the PDF summary, GetYourGuide groups applicable tax with Service Commission under Our Commission.

If your payout seems lower than a simple “retail price minus headline commission rate” calculation, this tax line may be part of the explanation.

Our Invoice explained guide shows where the other useful invoice fields sit, while Commission looks wrong is better if the underlying commission rate itself is the problem.

3. The rate is not one global GetYourGuide tax rate

This is the big thing to avoid misunderstanding.

There is not one universal VAT or GST percentage that every GetYourGuide supplier pays. GetYourGuide publishes different country-specific guidance because local rules differ.

Current examples in GetYourGuide’s own supplier help include:

  • Australia: 10% GST on commission for certain suppliers without a registered GST number.
  • New Zealand: 15% GST on commission for certain suppliers without a GST registration.
  • Turkey: 20% VAT on commission for certain non-VAT-registered suppliers.
  • Mexico: 16% VAT on GetYourGuide commission for Mexican suppliers under its published guidance.
  • Indonesia: GetYourGuide currently describes 11% VAT on commission for Indonesian tours.

Those are examples, not a global cheat sheet. Tax rules can change, and the exact treatment can depend on your registration information.

For the country details, use GetYourGuide’s own current pages: Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Mexico and Indonesia.

4. Your tax registration details can matter

Several of GetYourGuide’s country-specific guides distinguish between registered and non-registered suppliers and tell suppliers to keep their tax number up to date in the Supplier Portal.

That means if a tax amount suddenly appears or disappears, one sensible thing to check is whether your tax details in GetYourGuide are complete and current.

I am deliberately saying “check”, not “change it until the tax disappears”. Please do not use a cheerful SEO article as a tax-planning strategy. That would be a rather adventurous afternoon.

5. Can you reclaim it?

Maybe, depending on the country and your registration status.

For example, some of GetYourGuide’s current country guidance says properly registered suppliers can use its invoices as evidence for input VAT or GST credit. But the rules are jurisdiction-specific.

GetYourGuide itself says it is not permitted to provide tax or accounting advice and recommends consulting an accountant or tax adviser for specific questions. I am very happy to stand beside them on that particular hill.

GetYourGuide’s general invoicing guidance is here.

6. How tax can make a payout look lower

Imagine you mentally calculate the payout as retail bookings minus your commission rate. If tax is then applied to GetYourGuide’s commission, the amount due can be lower than that quick calculation.

That does not mean the payout is wrong. It means the calculation you were comparing it with may have left out one line.

If the tax amount explains the difference, lovely. Mystery solved. If the figures still do not reconcile after commission, tax, adjustments and cancellations are accounted for, our Payout reconciliation guide takes you through the whole invoice-to-bank chain.

What OTA Ninja can and cannot do here

OTA Ninja can identify tax-related amounts present in the payout files and include them when comparing the numbers.

What it cannot do is decide whether GetYourGuide has applied the legally correct VAT or GST treatment to your business. That depends on facts outside the payout files and, occasionally, on the sort of tax legislation that makes Excel look positively cuddly.

So use OTA Ninja to understand the arithmetic. Use qualified tax advice for the legal tax question.

Does the payout still look wrong after tax?

OTA Ninja can compare the invoice and payment confirmation and show where the remaining difference sits.

The sensible quick check

  1. Find the VAT on GYG Service field in the invoice Excel file.
  2. Check whether the PDF’s Our Commission total includes applicable tax.
  3. Confirm your tax registration details in the Supplier Portal are current.
  4. Read GetYourGuide’s country-specific guidance for your market.
  5. If you need to know whether you can reclaim or should be charged the tax, ask a qualified adviser.
  6. If the arithmetic still does not reconcile, investigate the payout separately.

Not quite the thrilling international adventure you had in mind when you entered tourism, perhaps. But at least the tax line now has a name and a job.
